Putting it all together

Having understood the different components, let's put them together. A sample flow would look something like the following. So, the web tier will serve the HTML, CSS, JS files, images, and other content. The application layer should execute the business logic, and the database layer should store any persistent data: 

The preceding diagram simply serves to explain that only the top tier is actually seen by the user and the remaining tiers are hidden underneath. You may also note that the different tiers are on different network segments.
